What if I told you – you can have a positive body image and a healthy body?

Hey Fitness Family, I missed day 6 and 7 of Women’s Month, so I decided to make Day 8 worth the wait!

Weight and body shape are such controversial topics these days. There are the media influences who punt the idea that women should be skinny, slender and even excessively thin to be beautiful. There are silly body trends such as striving to have a thigh gap or protruding rib cage. On the opposite side, there is the anti-body shaming movement who punt the idea that even if you are overweight or obese, you do not need to make any changes and you are beautiful as you are.

The problem with both of these views is that what they are both promoting is actually not in your best interest and both these views are equally unhealthy. The answer to the weight question is not BEAUTY but rather HEALTH. Perhaps this is where the confusion has come in? You can absolutely be beautiful and worthy at any size, but you most likely will not be in optimum health if you are very overweight or underweight. It is your responsibility to maintain your body at the healthiest state you are able to.

Personally, I pay less attention to how much a person weighs, but focus more on their body composition in terms of fat % vs lean muscle mass. Weight can be a very deceptive measure. A person can be light of weight and have a slender appearance, but have poor muscle tone and a high fat %. Similarly a person can be heavier, but have excellent muscle tone and a low fat %.

So, how much fat do we need to be healthy? The following table is a good indication of the healthy fat % ranges in men and women:

The effects of a too low fat % in our bodies can result in the following unhealthy side effects:

  • Osteoporosis, or fragile bones
  • Dehydration
  • Lowered immune system
  • Loss of reproductive function
  • Heart function impact
  • Organ shrinkage
  • Loss of muscle tissue
  • Digestive problems
  • Nervous system damage
  • Death in severe cases

The effect of a too high fat% is equally detrimental, and can have the following unhealthy side effects:

  • heart disease
  • high blood pressure
  • liver disease
  • osteoporosis, or fragile bones
  • type 2 diabetes
  • Cancer risk increased
  • arthritis
  • gallstones
  • sleep apnoea, snoring
  • Death in severe cases

If you know you are very underweight or overweight, please make the effort to start making those lifestyle changes that will bring you back to HEALTH, so that you and your loved ones can enjoy your BEAUTY for much, much longer.
